13 September 2016

Solar Power International 2016, one of the largest trade shows serving the solar industry, takes place 12 to 15 September in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Opening General Session took place last evening with a welcome from Interim President of SEIA, Tom Kimbis, and President & CEO of the Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA), Julia Hamm. The exhibition hall opens this morning at 10 a.m. A few of the highlights we’ll be covering include:

  • Solar Plus--How Solar Got Smart: Tuesday 13 September from 8 to 9 a.m. in the Westgate Pavilion Ballroom
  • Smart Energy Microgrid Pavilion: This exhibit located right outside the Las Vegas Convention Center will include a tiny home, solar car ports and more. The ceremonial unplugging of the pavilion takes place on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. Check out the Arc House with solar provided by JinkoSolar.
  • The View from Here—The Future of the US Solar Industry: Wednesday 14 September from 9 to 10 a.m. in the Westgate Pavilion

Energy storage everywhere

We’ll also be watching the outpouring of products serving the energy storage market. And what a market it is. According to the latest US Energy Storage Monitor the US deployed 41.2 megawatts of energy storage in the second quarter of 2016, an increase of 126% over the first quarter of the year. We expect this to only grow as utilities grapple with net metering and consumers learn of the many flexible options available. Here are just a few:

SMA is showing smart home with energy storage technologies in booth 959.  Sharp Electronics Corporation’s Energy systems and Services Group is now offering financing for commercial and industrial (C&I) solar PV systems coupled with its SmartStorage energy storage solution.  Sharp will be giving a presentation on Advanced Modeling Software & Controls for Optimizing Solar Plus Energy Storage Systems, Tuesday 13 Sept. from 11 to 12 in Room N246 at SPI.

Outback Power Technologies’ SkyBox True Hybrid Energy System is designed to help installers and users meet the challenge of integrating renewable energy generation with storage. See Outback in booth 2825.

Enphase is showing the Enphase Storage System that integrates generation, storage, management and control. See it in booth 1111.

SimpliPhi Power offers energy storage systems that use lithium ferrous phosphate chemistry. Stop by and see their wide range of storage systems in booth 1722.

Tabuchi Electric Company of America has grid-friendly solar and storage systems with management functionality. Tabuchi is exhibiting in 2933.

Trojan Battery specializes in deep-cycle batteries and has a line of flooded, AGM and gel batteries that meet the requirements of renewable energy systems. Stop by booth 1576 and learn about the new J200RE, the latest addition to the Smart Carbon line, designed specifically for renewable energy applications.
